Phoenix Art Museum – Ikebana

The Phoenix Art Museum boasts live music and free admission for First Fridays. We specifically attended tonight to enjoy the special Ikebana exhibit. My favorites had interesting angles, simplicity or color combinations. An exquisite display of flower art, the pieces will be on display from Friday, February 5, 10 AM – Sunday, February 7, 5 PM.

The Museum is delighted to welcome back Ikebana of Arizona for the 31st annual presentation of flower arrangements in the Art of Asia Gallery. Ikebana, literally “living flowers,” is an ancient art. Said to have begun in China, flower arranging arrived in Japan with the introduction of Buddhism in the 6th century. Over centuries, the art form shed its religious mantle and came to be practiced by people from many levels of society.

The strict rules and prescribed formal techniques that are a hallmark of most Japanese art forms serve as the foundation for the symbolic meanings inherent in ikebana, such as the unity of opposites and, ultimately, the harmonious balance between heaven, earth and humanity. Unlike western-style floral arrangements, characterized by volume, color and complexity, ikebana embraces the spare, poetic beauty of line.

.

Different ikebana schools and styles are represented in this exhibition; arrangements by over 20 Valley ikebana teachers and their students are on display. Ikebana of Arizona members are on hand throughout the weekend to provide additional information.

Included with Museum admission.
