The Coffee Buzz in Ahwatukee presents an art showing titled Strong Coffee and Even Stronger Women, on display until 3/11/2010. I first learned about the art opening a couple of weeks ago from Karen Hernandez, one of the participating artists and also a Coffee Buzz team member. We walked over to the neighborhood java spot after dinner to join the festivities, listen to wonderful music and meet some the artists.

The most fun part about attending an art opening party is having the opportunity to chat with the artists about their creations, expressive styles and self-learning through art. Karen gave us insight on her views on still life, Ecuadorian coffee and nurturing the beauty in growing children. Getting the chance to meet her family, witness how the kids sweetly tended and watched over each other, and hear more of her story brought so much more color to her canvases when viewing her artwork.

I was particularly taken by Ruth Pina’s use of mixed media and how she came out in each of her paintings. The bold richness of the deep colors in the landscape behind her figure, the contrast of the white of her shoulder and sleeve, the delicate flow of the bow from her hat, the gold chain of her purse and metallic strands escaping off the paper… there was so much to soak in!

My favorite of the three pieces that Rachel Goede chose to display was the collage of 5 works by master artists “Death and Rebirth“. Rachel’s still life on our American cultural adoration of prescription drugs easily generated a talking point for lively discussion.
