Super Dragon Chinese Cuisine

They say that a good measure for the quality of a Chinese restaurant is to find out where Chinese families go to eat out.  One of my family’s all-time favorites is nearby my parents’ house – Super Dragon at 12th Street and Northern.  I read some lukewarm reviews on Yelp with regards to service, but can’t say that in the 100+ times we’ve frequented the restaurant we’ve had many bad service nights unless they were crazy busy with a special party banquet or Chinese New Year.

A hard working family-run business, they feel like family to us.  The owner Kam-Ti greets us warmly when we arrive and knows that our family likes to sit at one of the tables that can open a leaf or two.  We love to order a variety of dishes that won’t fit on the table otherwise, and then take the extra home for tomorrow’s lunch!  Manuel brings our hot tea out with a smile and a cheery “Como esta?”  He remembers that my mom doesn’t drink tea and will bring her pot of hot water separately. That’s so key… they genuinely remember us and sincerely welcome us back. You don’t get that level of familiarity at big chain restaurants which suffer from personnel turnover.

Delicious selections that I love to order:

  • Westlake Minced Beef Soup is notable because they prepare it with sliced steak at Super Dragon, whereas other restaurants often only put in ground beef. For an added kick to the soup, sprinkle in some ground white pepper.
  • Peking Duck here is the best in town.  They do a fantastic job and their pricing is extremely reasonable.
  • Sizzling Black Pepper Steak is my sister’s favorite.  Salt and Pepper Pork Chop and Walnut Prawns come in tied as a close second.
  • Young pea tips… I don’t know what these are technically called in English!  Say it like “dough-mee-ew” and get it with garlic.  If they are not in season, then baby bok choy in garlic is always a winner too  :)
  • Crab with Ginger and Scallions is a rare treat, only available when they have fresh crab in stock, but well worth asking for just in case they do have it.  Plan on getting your fingers messy because you MUST pick these legs up and eat them with your hands.  Don’t be shy, you’ll seriously want to lick every bit of the sauce off the shell.

I catered a church committee meeting by ordering double portions of some crowd-pleasing standards:

  • Chicken Lo Mien
  • House Friend Rice with BBQ Pork, Shrimp and Chicken
  • Baby Bok Choy in Garlic Sauce
  • Green Beans and Beef

The take out boxes were deceiving in size.  When I first set them out, I was worried and wasn’t sure that I had ordered enough.  Boy, was I wrong!  Not only did everyone at the meeting enjoy, but I brought the lefties home and shared them with the neighbors… that’s feeding 14 people for about $60 and there was STILL some food left over!  It was amazing.  Interestingly, the bok choy disappeared first…  who says that people don’t like to eat their veggies?!

Shhh, I’ll even tell you the super secret… order the set dinner “B2″ off of the laminated Chinese menu and substitute roasted duck instead of the chicken. I have to admit that I can’t hardly read Chinese despite taking a bunch of classes throughout the years (my nieces and 5-year-old nephew currently beat the pants off me in this regard) but I know that “B2″ is the way to go if you are hungry and eating out with a few friends! For less food, asking for “A2″ offers a set dinner with fewer dishes but it comes with chicken soup instead of minced beef soup.

I used to love that place before I had to eat gluten free. I haven’t been back since though. Would love to eat there again. The owners were always so friendly and nice, and the food was delicious and good prices too.
